There are many theories, ideas and concepts regarding what happens after a person dies, some of which are more calming than others. Hence, most people imagine a tranquil environment where they are completely careless and without a shadow of sadness in them, which would indeed be pretty sweet. On the other hand, the situation would be dire if you had to face a boring afterlife for eternity.
Undrifted is an interesting little game in which you play the role of a young boy exploring a forest in spirit form. In order to make it to the end of your journey, it’s imperative that you keep an eye on your health and also inspire life into various creatures along the way. However, the game has a few problems you have to deal with as well, some of which are pretty annoying.
The gameplay feels very familiar if you’ve had any contact with endless runners before, although it’s definitely not the same thing. Thus, you must avoid certain obstacles and interact with others, which can be a bit confusing at first. In essence, you must bring deer and trees back to life by passing through, but every time you do this you lose hit points and get tired.
You can replenish your HP by picking up useful items, such as teddy bears and backpacks. However, just like the obstacles and the levels themselves, these items are randomly generated throughout the game, but not in a very balanced way. Thus, it often happens that you die because too many trees spawn in front of you, but no backpacks or teddy bears. Naturally, it gets frustrating after a while.
As for the graphics, the game doesn’t look bad at all, but then again there’s not much to see anyway. The environment remains the same at all times, except of course for the three interchangeable obstacles that appear every now and again. Other than that, there’s not much else to see or do, which is a bit of bummer, despite the fact that the game is still in Early Access.
When it’s all said and done, Undrifted is not a bad idea, but it needs more content before it can express what it truly wants to say. Hence, right now there’s just not enough elements to keep you interested, not to mention the fact that it also fails to spawn the helpful items you need to survive for more than a minute or two.
