Endless runners are pretty new concepts in the world of video games, although they are not entirely original. However, they can keep you busy for a while, and they are the perfect distraction on your smartphone for when you have a few spare minutes. On top of that, they can also be designed to be extremely difficult, just in case you are aching for a challenge.
Try Harder is an endless running game in which your only goal is to jump whenever something is blocking your way. It’s as simple as that, yet the game has the power to eat a lot of your time if you let it, especially if you do not like to leave anything unfinished. As you might expect, the levels are infinite, but they get tougher and tougher until they break you, which keeps you on edge at all times.
There’s a short tutorial in place when you start playing, and it’s actually quite annoying that you have to skip it every time you generate a new level. Speaking of which, the levels are randomly generated and infinite, but you play on the same one if you do not manually generate a new one. This is because you can use your own dead bodies to make it over tougher obstacles.
Since the levels get tougher and tougher, you need a bit of help as well, which comes in the form of power-ups that temporarily make your character a bit stronger. Hence, whether you turn into an invincible ball that can ignore spikes altogether or you perform a simple double jump, every power-up has its use. In fact, some portions are almost impossible if you do not have something to use.
As for the graphics, the game is obviously not very flashy in this regard, although it’s pretty colorful and modern-looking. The levels have a tendency to get repetitive after a while, especially since there are very few textures and shapes. The music is nothing to write home about either, so it’s up to the gameplay to keep you busy for longer than a few minutes.
In the end, Try Harder is actually quite entertaining and well-designed, even if it’s clearly a mobile product ported to PC with a few minor modifications. However, the fun factor is satisfactory, so it should be able to keep you engaged for quite some time if you are the type who likes a challenge and always improving your high score.
