Amnesia is a very common theme in video games, because it can easily be used to explain most plot holes and character backgrounds. It’s also a nice starting point, because it allows the writers to gradually describe the character without boring the players with a long introduction beforehand. However, it can obviously get repetitive and annoying after a while, because it can only be fun for so long.
Towards The Pantheon: Escaping Eternity is a top-down RPG with adventure and puzzle elements, in which you play the role of a soldier as he wakes up in a strange location with no memory of how he got there. Your job is to explore the place in question and help the soldier remember things, while also solving puzzles and finding out more about the creepy location you find yourself exploring.
The story is not that pretentious, but that’s mostly because this is a prequel for an upcoming full-length RPG. Hence, this is designed to give you an idea of how the full game is going to feel like, while not spoiling too much in the process. As for the gameplay, you pretty much have to open doors and find useful objects, although there are some riddles to solve every now and again too.
The dark environments play a crucial role in the atmosphere, because it can feel pretty scary sometimes, especially since you can only see a small fraction of your surroundings at any given time. Most of the doors you come across are locked or jammed, so it’s important to find a route around the levels without getting lost in the process. Even so, there’s very little action going on in this short prequel.
The graphics are actually not bad at all for a retro game, especially since the artwork is very much in tune with the dark atmosphere. Some of the rooms are a bit too barren and repetitive, but the overall feel and look of the game are very convincing. The music and the sound effects help a lot with this as well, which is always a good sign.
Even if Towards The Pantheon: Escaping Eternity is way too short to be a proper game, it certainly sets the mood for the upcoming game. Hence, it achieves its goal, which is to make you curious about what’s coming next.
