The Hypersonic Effect

If you’re in the mood for a space-themed game that takes you back to the days when arcades were wildly popular, The Hypersonic Effect is a fitting choice. It is very simple, and it doesn’t offer a lot of content, but it is still pretty fun.

You control an unarmed spacecraft that needs to collect energy tanks in order to continue its journey, as well as orbs that are useful in some other way. It can only be played with a controller, as keyboard input is sadly not supported.

The ship you are tasked with controlling can only move with the help of thruster boosts, which propel it a significant distance across the screen. Since there are many dangers to avoid throughout the level, make sure you don’t boost in the wrong direction.

Notably, once you reach the edge of the screen, the ship continues its movement from the other side of the level; this can be helpful if you use your momentum to your advantage, but it is also quite dangerous.

Your objective is to collect every energy tank in the level, although orbs can also be gathered in order to increase your final score. If you manage not to take any damage, you will receive additional points.

It is also important to complete each level using as few boosts as possible, as you get bonus points if you manage to use your inertia to maximum effect.

Naturally, there are dangers to be avoided in each level, from stationary obstacles to rotating death rays. You have a total of three lives to start with, although you can choose to expend a certain number of points in order to continue your run.

Once you get used to the mechanics, Hypersonic Effect can be quite enjoyable, albeit not for very long. You need to plan your moves carefully if you want to achieve the highest score, but quick reactions are also important. Sadly, though, the game can only be played with a gamepad.
