Super Tower Rush

Although it doesn’t take much to make a successful video game, there has to be a drop of brilliance in order to attract a large number of players. A great gimmick always makes the experience more enjoyable, and it also helps if replayability is off the charts as well. Procedural generation makes the latter a lot easier nowadays, but that still doesn’t mean it’s easy to make something extraordinary.

Super Tower Rush is a challenging arcade game in which the goal is pretty simple: descend as quickly as possible to avoid the spikes that follow you. It’s not a brilliant game, and it’s still pretty basic in most regards, but it could become a lot better with more work. Right now, the lack of variety makes it difficult to keep playing for longer than a few minutes, unfortunately.

The gameplay mechanics can be quickly learned as well, given the fact that there’s not much to do. Each platformer has only one opening, and you must jump through it while avoiding the stacks of boxes. Some of these boxes make it extra difficult to rush, especially if you try to push too many of them at once, but that’s not the most annoying mechanic, unfortunately.

There are times when you’ll die no matter what you do, even at the very beginning of the game. The boxes seem to be randomly placed, which means that sometimes the pattern will outright be impossible to break. There are exploding crates as well, which throw your character around when they blow. This is not always a problem, except when they throw you into the spikes.

As far as the technical aspects are concerned, the game is designed to look as retro as possible, which means pixel graphics and colorful environments. Although the 2D perspective and the low pixel count shouldn’t bother anyone, the lack of variety in the backgrounds is annoying. Hence, the experience gets boring in a rush, which is not good news for an endless platformer.

Although it has some glaring flaws at the moment, Super Tower Rush can be turned into gold with enough work and dedication. More variety in the levels, better stage generation and less bugs could certainly make it a pleasure to hunt the high scores.
