Learning about the world in a video game can be a very enjoyable experience, especially if the writers take their time to include some interesting elements. It helps if the world in question is entirely new and intriguing, because it quickly becomes obvious if everything is inspired by something else. Hence, walking simulators are fairly popular nowadays, especially indie ones with quirky ideas.
Storyseeker is a top-down adventure game in which your goal is to explore the world and find out what goes on there and whether you can help. Most of your time is spent walking around and trying to find a new path that takes you to another part of the map, so there’s barely any action involved. However, the mystery keeps you engaged for long enough for the adventure to be fun.
There’s not a lot of information regarding the main character, but then again it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. The other NPCs you meet are pretty weird as well, especially since you can talk to ghosts and various other creatures. They can all drop hints about what you should be searching for, but the actual exploration is still the most important part.
Probably the most enjoyable thing about Storyseeker is that you are not constrained by loading screens or tiny maps, since the whole thing is accessible from the start. Finding your way around is a whole different subject, on the other hand, because you can easily get lost when there is no minimap or anything of the sort. Hence, having a good visual memory certainly helps a lot.
Speaking of which, the graphics are basic from a technical point of view, but the developers used artwork to overcome this aspect. Hence, even if you often look at no more than three solid colors at once, there are also locations that feature unique architecture and neat artwork. The music is very nice as well, since it goes very well with the overall atmosphere.
Even if Storyseeker is not the kind of game that keeps you coming back again and again, the story is fun enough to be worth a complete playthrough, and it’s short enough for you to achieve that in one run. Thus, you should definitely give it a shot if you are into exploration games.
