Sonic Lost Adventure: Havok Harbor

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most popular video game franchises ever made, despite the fact that barely any games are being released lately. However, the fans are constantly devising new ideas and short adventures in the Sonic universe, even if most of them never get too much public attention. If you are a fan, on the other hand, then you’ve probably played more than your share of indie productions.

Sonic Lost Adventure: Havok Harbor is a 3D platformer that aims to recreate the same atmosphere as in some of the newer games in the franchise, and it manages to do so wonderfully. Hence, while the basic gameplay mechanics are the same as they always were, it’s always fun to take Sonic for a spin, especially since there are so many ways to tackle a level when you have total control over the character.

As you might suspect, there’s no story to talk about, given the fact that your only purpose is to collect rings and try not to die. The action takes place in a harbor, which means that you are racing on top of containers, ships, and various other such buildings. Naturally, you must pay attention to obstacles as well, because some of them can cause you to fall and lose a life.

Speed is very important in Sonic Lost Adventure: Havok Harbor, as it usually is in every Sonic game. You can get a boost by holding down the appropriate key, but there are certain objects around the game world that increase your speed at no cost to your energy. However, it gets significantly more difficult to keep up with the incoming obstacles, because you can easily run into a wall and lose all momentum.

As for the graphics, the game excels in this regard as well, especially when you consider the fact that it features Unreal Engine 3 under the hood. A lot of work was dedicated to level design, and it’s quite the adventure to explore all the alternative routes. You can even find bonuses and hidden secrets if you search well enough. Unfortunately, the game only features one level, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to receive any more content.

In the end, Sonic Lost Adventure: Havok Harbor is quite polished and refined, especially when you consider the small team that worked on it. Hence, if you are aching for some Sonic and you do not own a console, this can certainly feed your appetite.
