The rise of the machines is a common theme in sci-fi stories, and it almost never bodes well for the humans involved. Cold, logical computers apparently find people useless and more of a pest than intelligent individuals, which is why they prefer to exterminate us as soon as they get the chance. However, humans always find a way to fight back and survive, in spite of their inferior weapons and technology.
Skynet Rampage II is a top-down stealth game in which you play as a human trying to fight against the ruthless robots that have taken over the world. Sneak attacks are your best hope, on the other hand, because the terminators possess much better reflexes and can strike you down as soon as you reveal yourself. Even so, there’s still hope if you manage to stay hidden.
You start by having a handful of characters at your disposal, each one of which is in a different bunker around the map. The goal is to use these characters in order to eliminate all threats above the ground, and you have to be sneaky in order to achieve this. Thankfully, there are plenty of powerful weapons and gadgets that can be used to overpower the machines.
The gameplay suffers from many problems, on the other hand, because it’s a real struggle to move, stay hidden and strike back at the same time. The camera is the worst part of the game, because it’s very difficult to see what you are doing, and you have to keep a certain key down in order to zoom it. To make things worse, the controls are slow and laggy, which is not good news in a game where precision is paramount.
Movement is slow and cumbersome for some reason, since you have to slowly rotate your character in order to change directions. Since you cannot even tell which way you are facing most of the time, frustration kicks in after the first few minutes. The repetitive maps and boring level design don’t help either, but they would matter less if the gameplay was more fun.
In the end, the stealth part of Skynet Rampage II is too broken to function as intended, which makes the overall experience extremely annoying and frustrating. Thus, it’s highly unlikely that you can keep playing for more than a few minutes, especially after random bugs make an appearance as well.
