Being able to finally provide an answer to a riddle that’s been bugging you for a while is a pretty exciting feeling, especially if your answer happens to be right as well. Hence, this is why so many people adore puzzle games, even if they are usually quite slow and devoid of any real action. However, the atmosphere is held together by the fact that you are always actively thinking about how to resolve the situation.
Sky Puzzles is a 3D platformer and puzzle game rolled into one, in which you have to solve relatively simple puzzles by simply moving from one place to the other. Granted, it’s not as easy as it sounds, especially after you find out that the platforms you step on have to be lit in a certain order if you want them to remain lit when you make your way back to the exit.
As such, you are in control of a sphere that must roll from tile to tile and thus activate each one of them. When all of them are lit, the exit tile lights up as well and you can make your way to the next level. Naturally, you must also make it to the exit without stepping onto the same tiles, because doing so turns them off again. It’s not a complex formula, but it works pretty well under the circumstances.
It must be mentioned that you can also jump, although this action is incremental and you are not free to land wherever you want. Thus, you can either land one or two tiles ahead, which is a bit of a bummer, but also necessary to solve some of the puzzles. In the same regard, the camera must be rotated if you want to go left or right, since you can’t do it by simply pressing the appropriate directional key.
As for the graphics, everything is about as basic as you would expect, especially since the game is more of an experiment than a finished product. Thus, the textures are missing altogether and there are no special effects to speak off, but the overall quality is not that bad. There’s no soundtrack either, but then again you’ll be too busy trying to figure out the riddles.
In the end, Sky Puzzles may not be GOTY material, but it has what it takes to keep you busy for a while, at least until you manage to solve all the puzzles or you give up. Hence, it needs more content if it’s ever going to be released as a serious game.
