Sometimes it’s enough to walk and admire beautiful scenery in order to improve your mood, which is especially true for video games, given the fact that modern game engines can be incredibly realistic. However, there still has to be some purpose to the whole thing, otherwise it gets boring in a rush, especially if the map is too small to keep you busy for very long.
STRUCTUS is a first-person exploration game that challenges you to investigate an intriguing world and unravel its mysteries as you go along. There’s not much of a story to go along with the setting, on the other hand, so you might be done in a matter of minutes if you move quickly enough. This is quite the bummer, especially since the developers could have done a lot more with the concept.
The action takes place in a strange land with barely any vegetation or buildings around, so it resembles a desert of some kind. However, you can find a few structures if you look around, and some of these can be explored in order to find out more about them. These buildings are actually fairly intriguing, because they looked like collapsed towers, and the architectural style is quite interesting as well.
Walking simulators have their charm most of the time, but in those cases the map is big enough to keep your eyes busy over long periods. In this case, the fact that you cannot complete puzzles or do anything of the sort gets on your nerves after the first minutes, mainly because you are done inspecting everything very quickly. Thus, the game loses its appeal and it doesn’t create too many memories either.
Thankfully, at least the graphics are enjoyable, especially when it comes to the design of the towers in question and the post-processing effects. Not much can be said about the soundtrack, unfortunately, although it does blend pretty well in the background. However, it must be mentioned that the map is way too small and empty in most cases, which hurts the overall experience.
STRUCTUS is not a bad game, but it’s too empty to be a proper exploration game, since there’s not much to see along the way. However, it could certainly be improved with enough work and dedication, at least if the developers want to do so.
