Although the current trend calls for video games to be as realistic as possible, there is also a tendency for the industry to return to its original state, mainly thanks to the booming indie market and the plethora of 2D platformers released every year. Hence, gamers are just as excited about simple, yet challenging platformers as they are about the next entry in the Halo series, more or less.
Robot Death Factory 3000 may have a rather pompous name, but the actual game is quite straightforward and simple to understand. In essence, your purpose is to reach the door to the next level, although the journey there is a lot more complicated. Traps, enemies and tricky jumps need to be dealt with on your way to the exit, which is the fun part.
There is not much of a story to explain what’s happening on the screen. No one bothers to tells you who or what the main character is, why is he able to shoot boxes out of his gun, or what are all those giant bunnies doing in the facility. However, it doesn’t really matter when you think about it, because the experience remains more or less the same whether there’s a plot in place or not.
Just like in every platformer of this kind, it is important that players feel comfortable and they do not have to worry about whether the jump mechanics are going to work the next time you need them. Thankfully, everything works as intended in Robot Death Factory 3000, including the controls and the collision system, which are some of the most crucial elements in a puzzle platformer.
As far as the technical aspect is concerned, you shouldn’t expect too much from an indie production anyway, especially since this was made using Game Maker. Hence, the visual quality is nothing to write home about, but the level design is pretty nice in most cases. One of the more disappointing aspects is the fact that there is no actual difficulty curve, which means that the levels do not necessarily get harder to complete the more you advance.
In the end, Robot Death Factory 3000’s biggest mistake is the fact that it’s too short to get into the proper mood. It is also a bit too easy and the graphics could use an update, but these can be easily fixed with enough time and effort.
