The Ace Attorney series managed to gain quite a cult following over the years, even if they weren’t the most complex adventure games out there. However, the core concept was pretty original, which means that there were not a lot of alternatives if you wanted to enjoy a game about attorneys trying to defend their clients.

Regeria Hope Episode 1 is an interactive visual novel in which you play the role of an ambitious attorney by the name of Regeria, who takes on her first case and is ready to leave her mark on the system. Although the game comes very close to the Ace Attorney formula, there are some key differences that make the experience feel a tad different and much more modern.

To begin with, on the other hand, the story is very important in a game that has limited interaction. The case Regeria has to tackle concerns a bride that collapses during her wedding reception after taking a sip from her wine glass. As it turns out, the glass was coated with cyanide. Naturally, the first suspect is her husband, who also happens to be your first client as the defendant.

As far as your job as a lawyer is concerned, you really need to pay attention to what is being said, otherwise your client may not get a chance to defend himself. Hence, whether the prosecution lies or just isn’t aware of the true facts, Rogeria must interrupt false accusations and present her evidence to the contrary. The rest is done automatically, but the thrill is enough to make you feel like in a real courtroom.

Speaking of which, the graphics are quite detailed as well, especially when it comes to the characters and the environments. Granted, it sometimes seems like nothing really changes around you, but the scenery is diverse enough to keep you from getting bored. The soundtrack is great as well, and it really goes well with the action unfolding on the screen.

All things considered, Regeria Hope Episode 1 managed to do quite well for itself, especially in the gameplay department. Hence, if you enjoy slightly more interactive visual novels where you actually have to do some work, this is one of the best in its class.
