Psy Horror

Being alone in a dangerous environment is a lot scarier than you imagine, especially if it’s dark and you do not have a way to defend yourself. Hence, this is why most horror games put you in situations where you have to survive on your own, as well as explore creepy places full of traps and monsters. Granted, the atmosphere must be somewhat special in order to make an impression on the players.

Psy Horror is a classic first-person horror game in which you play the role of a man stranded in the middle of nowhere, trying to find his way home. The gameplay is nothing special, given the fact that all you have to do is walk and shoot the occasional monster. The atmosphere is fairly weak as well, which means that there’s no real sense of dread or danger as you go along.

To begin with, your character finds himself trapped in the middle of nowhere after following a distress call. Naturally, his car breaks down and he heads out to investigate the woods, armed only with a simple pistol. Zombie dogs and what appears to be a menacing cloud of smoke attack you along the way, but your bullets are only enough to put two creatures down before you run out.

There’s no actual horror to speak of, since it takes more than a dark environment and a few monsters to cause real fear. Frustration is the prevalent emotion throughout the experience, especially when it comes to the poor gameplay mechanics and the repetitive level design. In fact, it sometimes feels like you are walking in circles, given the lack of environmental variation.

The graphics don’t help with the situation either, although they are not necessarily bad either. A lot more could have been achieved with the power of the engine at hand, but the repetitive textures and lack of attention to detail ruin the whole thing. The sound effects are laughable as well, which is quite the bummer when you consider how important this element is in a horror game.

All things considered, Psy Horror is nothing more than a collection of Unity assets thrown together in a rush, with a bit of darkness to justify the word “horror” in its name. Hence, you certainly won’t feel scared, and it only takes a few minutes to become too frustrated with the gameplay to go on.
