Pocahontas

Pocahontas is an old-school video game created around the popular Disney movie with the same title and was initially released in ‘96 for Sega. Times have changed and improved into the gaming world and now this classic can be played on more modern systems thanks to emulators.

The game takes from the movie as much as it can, and it follows the young girl’s journey of overcoming all kinds of obstacles and tries to keep as much as the plot as possible.

Along the way, Pocahontas encounters various animals that are in some kind of trouble. After helping them, the animal’s spirit gives her a special ability that can be used whenever she needs it. For example, helping a trapped deer, the spirit helps her become more agile and makes her capable of performing higher jumps.

Meeko doesn't get these bonuses, he’s there to be cute and helpful or in need of help when the case calls for it.

Compared to other games that share its period and design, things in Pocahontas might seem to be moving a lot slower than you would prefer. Animations are nice and fluent, considering 1996’s standards, but by today’s, the game will be off to a very slow start.

Pocahontas is a classic platformer and you along with Meeko will have plenty of jumps to do, secrets to discover and lots of little puzzles to figure out. The game allows you to switch from one character to another anytime you want and each of them can go do their own thing.

On a closing note, if you’re looking for a piece of ‘ancient’ gaming, you should try Pocahontas. It’s controls are a bit counterintuitive at first but once you get the handle on them, things become rather fun.
