Although planets usually form from the remains of exploded stars, it’s tantalizing to imagine the process more like in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where they are actually created in a really big factory. Being the architect of an entire planet sounds pretty overwhelming, on the other hand, especially if it needs to support life as well.

Planet is a sandbox game in which you get to put your creativity to the test and see how close can you get to something that resembles a real planet. You do not have too many tools at your disposal, and even the ones you have are pretty basic, but that doesn’t mean you cannot obtain great things with enough imagination. There are no challenges or missions to hurry you along.

In fact, there’s nothing but the planet and a few tiles to play with. You can add trees, simple ground, ice, water and villages, as well as combine them to obtain something more realistic. The villages are just houses with fortifications surrounding them, with no people or activity, but it’s still a nice touch. The water flows depending on whether it’s part of a river or an ocean.

There are also multiple planet sizes to choose from, depending on how much spare time you have. They are all randomly generated at first, but you can add your own touch afterward. The size of the tiles can be changed as well, which allows you to work more quickly when not much detail is needed. Some of the tiles can even blend in with each other to create a smoother transition.

In the same regard, you can increase the elevation of a tile by clicking on it multiple times, although there is a limit. This can be used to create mountains, or even tall fortresses like in some kind of fantasy realm. The transition between different elevation points is also pretty smooth, at least if the level difference is not too great. The graphics are engaging as well, albeit still rather simple and colorful.

In the end, Planet is not something to lose a few days with at the moment, but that can change with the addition of more tiles and possibilities. Thus, a no-limit planet creator can be the perfect way to relax and put your creativity to good use.
