School is a pretty weird place in real life as well, let alone in movies and animated shows. However, nothing beats the weirdness of anime in this regard, given the fact that high school appears to be the epicenter of every love story on Earth. Obviously, most of it is designed to be funny and outrageous, just to emphasize on a pretty carefree period in everyone’s life.
One Thousand Lies is a visual novel in which you get to watch the story of a guy by the name of Ciaran Endyein, who’s your typical high schooler trying to get good grades and have some fun in the meantime. You find out more about his passions and dreams over the course of the story, but the game is not very serious anyway, so you shouldn’t expect a true character arc or anything like that.
Speaking of which, the story takes off when Endyein receives a weird email, which prompts a whole series of events. Almost every subject is approached over the course of the plot, whether it’s friendship, romance, school or a few other things. The characters are pretty different from each other as well, but the sad part is that the whole thing is non-interactive, meaning that you won’t make any choices along the way.
As mentioned before, the characters are pretty well-designed, but that’s true in the graphics department as well. Not only are they different when it comes to how they interact with the main character, but they are also very nicely drawn and quite colorful. While their personalities are not all that different in the end, at least they feel like semi-real people.
The overall graphics quality is pretty decent as well, at least if you are a fan of the anime style. Everything is very colorful and expressive, especially when the characters are expressing some kind of emotion. On the other hand, the backgrounds can become a tad repetitive after a while, at least if you are a slow reader.
In the end, One Thousand Lies is full of typical anime tropes, colorful outfits and simple dialog, but that was the whole point from the start. Thus, if you are in for something light and cheerful, this might very well do the trick.
