Oath of Genesis is a lightweight role-playing game in which you enter and fight in a world where humanity’s survival is being threatened by a race of wolves. Your name is Genesis, you are a young warrior and you’re the only hope left.
Right off the bat, Oath of Genesis is a simple and slow-paced RPG in which you get to choose one of two characters, a knight and a mage. The setting is the classic one, a town and its human inhabitants are in danger and only you can help them.
Like in all RPGs, you will not be strong enough to fight the big boss until you kill some of his minions to increase your experience level and get the best combat items. Oath of Genesis features the basics of an RPG game and offers them in a simplified form which makes it easy to play by anyone. There are a handful of monster types to battle, a few handy NPCs, several items and quests, all of which don’t stand out in any particular way but make the game casually relaxing.
Oath of Genesis is a decent looking game that features a nice design. For an indie title, it’s actually quite good but it does have some potential setbacks. The quests, for example, are very repetitive in the sense that all you have to do is kill wolves and collect fangs, potions or just slay a certain number of them.
However, the ‘kill a number of those kinds of creatures’ type of quest is something that has been around for ages. In Oath of Genesis it becomes even less appealing since combat is very tedious. The character has two moves, the normal and a critical, there are no spells to cast, and even the mage uses a melee attack. It’s an easy game to understand and master but the lack of variety or exciting moments might not encourage you to complete the game.
In the end, the final boss fight will come down to stacking up tens of potions in your inventory, and using them as you battle the Wolf Leader. It’s all very anticlimactic.
To wrap it up, Oath of Genesis is OK for an indie game but it really needs an upgrade in the excitement department. It’s kind of boring to play but it will help you kill some time if you need to.
