You don’t always have to be behind the wheel of a powerful car in order to have a good race, but it certainly helps. On the other hand, almost every car can be pushed to its limits if the situation calls for it, although it’s obviously not recommended to do so. Thankfully, we have video games to help us have fun when the real world is not satisfying enough.

Need For Vaz 2106 is an arcade racing game that challenges you to participate in high-speed races using old Lada cars, which can be a bit anti-climactic when it comes to the adrenaline levels involved. On top of that, the gameplay is rather stiff as well, making it difficult to steer properly and make good use of your driving skills when it comes to cornering.

The game is split into multiple levels, and you have the freedom to choose which one to play and in what order. Naturally, the first stages are fairly simple, given the fact that all you have to do is collect all the gold coins along the way and reach the finish line as quickly as possible. In fact, all that changes is the length of the tracks, because the mechanics stay the same throughout the levels.

As mentioned before the mechanics can be very unintuitive, especially when it comes to how the cars behave on the track. It’s very difficult to take corners, regardless of how slow you are going and how hard you rotate the wheel, which means that you often find yourself unable to turn properly. Since the rewards are certainly not worth it, you might get too annoyed with the game to play it for more than a few minutes.

The graphics fail to impress as well, especially when it comes to level design and the quality of the vehicle models. Even if the game is designed to be compatible with as many PCs as possible, the visual quality could have been a lot better, and the level design really has no excuse. The music is poorly chosen as well, although at least that can be disabled at will.

In the end, Need For Vaz 2106 is clearly not a simulator, and it’s not fun enough to be the kind of arcade game that keeps you coming back for one more race every now and again. Moreover, the atrocious handling system makes it very difficult to enjoy yourself even for a few minutes.
