Necromancy has been around forever in the realm of fantasy games, and in many different forms as well. In broad terms, necromancers are mages that reanimate dead corpses and use them as soldiers or laborers. As you might suspect, such mages are not very well-regarded, and they are usually the villains in almost every fantasy game out there.
Necromancer Accountant is a very simple management game in which you get the chance to play the role of a necromancer as he tries to raze villages one after another using his mighty undead army. Even though it’s free of charge, you should know that everything about the game is very simple and unrefined, including the gameplay, the interface and most of the other elements that comprise the experience.
In order to begin, you can pick one of multiple classes for your necromancer, depending on whether you want more mana regeneration or slightly stronger warriors. After that, you are thrown in the middle of a randomly-generated map, with the sole purpose being to destroy the villages around you. To do so, you must obviously build an army, which requires multiple types of resources.
Every worker or combat unit you create costs a certain amount of energy, which automatically replenishes every second or so. Not only that, but you also need corpses, and they are also replenished periodically. On top of all these things, the buildings that unlock new units require resources in order to be built, such as wood, stone or iron. However, the mana/corpses bars prevent you from doing too much at the beginning, which is frustrating.
To make things worse, the interface is not exactly refined either, and you may need to fumble with it for quite a while in order to understand what everything does. Everything is crammed into a little window with tabs, and since most of the screen is pretty empty anyway, there’s no reason behind this design. There’s also a very annoying pause whenever you click on a building, and the combat pretty much boils down to a battle of numbers.
Necromancer Accountant is the creation of a very small indie studio, so it’s only natural for it to have shortcomings. However, better design should be the top priority for potential future updates, because at the moment it’s just too annoying to interact with the interface and your units.
