My Name is Legion
Clear room after room of monsters and help your character get to the bottom of the dungeon in this retro roguelike #Retro roguelike #Dungeon crawler #Action RPG #Roguelike #Dungeon #Action
Roguelikes are amongst the oldest video games out there, given the fact that they were a thing back when text-based games ruled the market. However, they have evolved a lot over the years, at least when it comes to mechanics and the technology used to generate dungeons and encounters. Even so, the quintessential elements have remained the same, especially when it comes to survival.
My Name is Legion is a top-down roguelike in which the main goals are survival and exploration, since it’s mandatory to do both in order to advance. As such, you move from room to room in order to defeat monsters and acquire power-ups, but it’s obviously much tougher than that in practice, given the fact that you must do it all without letting the said monsters kill you.
The rooms are pretty small and packed with walls and obstacles, but there are only a handful of enemies at a time. Granted, they are pretty difficult to take on, especially since your skills take a while to recharge, and the limited space makes it difficult to dodge incoming attacks. The creatures get tougher and tougher later on, which only adds to the challenge.
To make matters easier, you can stumble onto power-ups that let you choose what kind of bonus you want your character to have. Hence, there are always two options, and it’s up to you to decide which one to pick. Whether you want more health points or faster projectiles, the real challenge is to make proper use of your extra abilities.
As for the graphics, they are designed to resemble the old GameBoy titles, meaning that everything has a green tint. The resolution is quite low as well, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you are into retro games. Even the soundtrack has the ability to transport you back to a simpler era, which is great if you don’t shy away from nostalgia.
In the end, My Name is Legion might feature very simple mechanics, but it’s not as easy as it looks at first. Hence, it can cause a lot of frustration if you are not familiar with the genre, so you better prepare for a couple of rage quits.
