Most fantasy stories rely on some kind of supernatural creatures in order to provide the readers with an epic experience, but most of the time these creatures are evil monsters driven by chaos and hatred. Hence, it’s not often that you see monsters depicted in a different light, although there are plenty of examples out there in which mutants or apparitions mend their ways.
Monster Club is a visual novel in which you get to follow the story of a few monsters as they try to get along with the outside world and with each other. The game is mostly a kinetic experience, in the sense that the story runs without your input for the most part, but there are a few choices every now and again too. Even so, the focus is on the story and the characters that are part of it.
The Monster Club is a family of monsters of humans that have come together in an attempt to prove to humans that they are not all bad or violent. In fact, at some point they actually recruit a human into their club, who is still part of the family after many years. Now, word reaches the club about a new creature that might need their help, so they decide to lend a helping hand.
The game is not as straightforward as it seems at first, because the group faces all sorts of internal struggles between its members. Not only that, but the monster they are trying to help does not seem to want their assistance, which brings forth a few moral questions. Naturally, it would be nicer if you as a player had the option to make hard choices, but that is not really the case here.
However, the presentation is definitely nice, even if the game feels a bit outdated in terms of interface and the video resolution. As such, the 4x3 aspect ratio is a tad annoying in this day and age, but at least the artwork itself is very nicely done. Plenty of work went into the backgrounds as well, which really helps with the overall atmosphere.
Even if Monster Club lacks interactivity and a proper branching story, the concept as a whole is quite engaging, especially if you are into fantasy tales and a bit of anime. Hence, it’s worth a shot from every visual novel fan out there.
