Mega Man is yet another one of Nintendo’s insanely popular game series from back in the 8-bit era, which is still remembered and even developed to this day. However, the first few titles are considered to be the most exciting, even if they were released on the old NES console, which featured pretty basic graphics. As it turns out, a retro look is what everyone wants at the moment, so the lack of color depth should not be a problem.
Megaman X Forgotten Memories is a fan’s attempt at recreating the classic atmosphere of the series, complete with 16-bit graphics and the basic gameplay mechanics from back then. Naturally, the levels are different and you still have to tackle a variety of new obstacles lying ahead, but if you happen to be familiar with the original franchise, it should be rather simple to figure out the concepts.
Mega Man is an android created by a scientist in order to serve as a lab assistant, which gets transformed into a battle robot not long after that. Hence, he is capable of using a powerful cannon arm to deal with almost any kind of danger. The same is true in the title at hand, because both the main character and his abilities are more or less the same as they were in the original series.
Since platforming is still one of the main elements in the game, you might have to get used again to wall jumps and the stressful sections featuring spikes and thin ledges for you to stand on. Not only that, but the enemies are pretty annoying as well, given the fact that some of them are positioned in such a way as to impede your progress as much as possible. They can be easily deal with, on the other hand, as long as you reach them in time.
As mentioned above, the game tries to emulate the original series as faithfully as possible, which means that even the graphics have been kept more or less the same. Hence, although they display the traditional heavy pixelation, the environments look more or less the same as they did back in the day. Unfortunately, the level design is rather lackluster, but it’s not a finished product yet.
In the end, Megaman X Forgotten Memories certainly has a lot of room for improvement, but it’s not trying to revolutionize the video games industry anyway. In fact, this is just a small treat for the fans of that era, only without the hassle of setting up an emulator in order to enjoy it.
