It’s certainly not easy to create a video game, especially one worth playing, but the truth is that the task has gotten a lot easier than it was a decade or two ago. Hence, almost anyone can throw something together in a few days with enough dedication, especially now that there are tools like Unity, Unreal Engine 4 and a few other that require almost no coding skills at all.
Mega Space Brawl! is a 2D platformer in which you play the role of a girl by the name of Skye as she tries to escape from dangerous environments and make her way to freedom. The game is as basic as it gets when it comes to gameplay mechanics and graphics, but that’s to be expected, given the fact that it’s the developer’s first stab at the video game industry.
There’s nothing too original about the gameplay, unfortunately, which is a big no-no nowadays when there are so many games published every day. The only thing you have to do in Mega Space Brawl! is get to the end of each stage and avoid the enemies along the way. There are some issues with the controls and the way your character responds to input, but all that can be improved with future updates.
Another thing that could use some work is the game pace, especially Skye’s speed and reaction time. While the enemies and the turrets seem to be moving rather quickly, Skye is very slow and cumbersome, which is not what you want in a platformer. Hence, it’s annoying to see how you are taking damage because your character does not follow commands quickly enough.
Lastly, the graphics are pretty basic and unimpressive from a technical point of view, but at least the are not ugly. In fact, the textures and the animations are pretty smooth, even if the landscape is rather sterile and boring most of the time. The soundtrack is not that bad either, although the few available tracks have the potential to get boring in a rush.
Even if Mega Space Brawl! misses a lot of elements to be considered a good game, it’s clear that the developer put some work into it. Hence, as long as the quality level keeps improving in future projects, the next game could be a lot better.
