Most fantasy stories present you with worlds that are full of monsters, demons, and various other races that usually do not get along with each other very well. However, humans always seem to come out on top, even if they do not have special abilities. Thus, one might wonder how such a world might look like if humans were the minority.
Max Massacre is a kinetic visual novel that presents you with the exploits of a young man by the name of Max as he tries to save everyone from certain doom. The interesting element is that the world he is part of is very unfriendly to humans, given the fact that people are actually about to go extinct if someone doesn’t do something. Naturally, this whole task rests upon your shoulders.
Since Max’s world is mostly ruled by demons, monsters and other bloodthirsty creatures, humans are mostly prey, and they are not powerful enough to compete with most non-humans. Max decides that he is going to be a hero, on the other hand, which is why he trains hard to become a powerful fighter and somehow save everyone from the monsters by presumably punching them.
Although the game runs by itself most of the time, there is one choice that can change the ending, which is why you can probably go through the story twice without getting bored. If you are a fan of visual novels this shouldn’t be a problem, but most players usually expect a bit more interaction along the way. Thankfully, at least the writing is pretty strong, and the story also long enough to explain most of the events by the end.
In terms of graphics, the artwork is surprisingly pleasant and detailed, even if there’s a shortage of backgrounds most of the time, which can make the experience feel repetitive. However, the characters are very nicely designed, and you can tell that the artists have put some work into the artwork. The soundtrack is decent as well, although it probably won’t create any memories.
The lack of choices might make Max Massacre a bit difficult to stomach for some players, but a kinetic novel can be just as fun under the right circumstances. Hence, it depends on how willing you are to read text for an hour or so instead of slashing your way through hordes of monsters.
