Maths is very useful in a variety of fields, which is the reason children everywhere are taught how to count and calculate from a very early age. However, it’s not the most exciting activity, and it can get quite tedious after a while. On the other hand, there are many ways one can make maths fun, especially with a bit of imagination.
Mathoria: It All Adds Up is a fun little game that aims to teach children how to deal with various calculations and equations while also saving the world from evil. In short, this is a top-down role-playing game designed in RPGMaker, which features maths instead of swords and magic spells. As such, children should be having fun and learn a few things along the way as well.
The story is obviously not very intricate, especially given the fact that it’s designed to be understood and enjoyed by very young children. Hence, it’s the usual good versus evil gimmick, with a boy as the main character and a villain trying to end the world. Not only that, but the main character’s mother is kidnapped in the beginning as well.
The gameplay mechanics are very intuitive as well, since you only need the WASD keys and one key to activate objects. As far as the combat is concerned, the only thing you have to worry about is knowing how to answer the questions. Naturally, the calculations you have to perform become tougher as you raise the difficulty level, but it’s still a game designed for children, so they are relatively easy in some regards.
Although the game features 2D graphics and tile-based environments, it actually looks quite lovely, at least if you do not mind the small maps and the countless transitions you’ll have to wait through. It’s quite obvious that RPGMaker was used, but there’s a lot of original artwork involved as well, which is great news for those who are sick and tired of the default assets used in most games developed with that engine.
In the end, Mathoria: It All Adds Up is probably not very attractive for adults, but children should have a blast with it regardless of whether they enjoy maths or not. The game features multiple difficulty levels to increase the challenge when things become too easy.
