Collecting coins may sound like a very basic activity in the eyes of non-gamers, but the actual experience can be a lot more fun that it sounds. Hence, many classic games featured this mechanic and thrived because of it, including massive successes like Super Mario or Sonic. However, modern games are less likely to profit from this, because the world moved on to other things.
Majikq is a simple 2D platformer that aims to bring back memories of a lost era, as well as provide you with a challenge. It may not feature the complex mechanics of modern video games, but it still takes a bit of practice until you are able to master the controls and avoid all the traps. However, the illusion does not last for very long until you realize that the game is pretty boring.
To begin with, your goal is to reach the end of each level without dying along the way. You can also collect coins as you traverse the stages, as well as extra lives if you are fortunate enough to notice them. On the other hand, you also have to avoid the enemies that patrol the areas, which gets significantly more difficult as you advance through the levels.
The enemies may be mindless bots that patrol fixed paths, but they can shoot if they happen to spot you in their line of sight. It’s important to avoid this as much as possible, because your character has a limited amount of health. Other enemies deal even more damage if they manage to hit you, so it’s all about moving quickly and striking before they get a chance to do the same.
Speaking of which, the controls are fairly responsive and snappy, which means that you do not have to struggle with movement or anything of the sort. The jumping mechanics appear to be a bit slow and annoying, but you can get used to them after a while. The graphics could be better as well, even if their goal is to make the game look old.
Even if Majikq lacks original ideas or a proper story, the gameplay is fun enough to keep you playing for a while, especially if you are a fan of retro games. Thus, there are worse games out there, although that’s not much of a compliment.
