Most virtual reality games are played from a first-person perspective, in order to take full advantage of the technology and help with immersion. However, it’s not necessarily a rule, because games can feature a wide variety of perspectives, depending on what message they want to transmit. In short, first-person is not synonymous with immersion, not by a long shot.
Lost Loot is a third-person adventure game in which you play the role of a man trying to explore an entire island on his own, in order to discover ruins and find the lost treasure from a pirate ship wreckage. The experience is still pretty boring at the moment, given the fact that there’s not much you can do in regards to missions or quests.
The story talks about a lone archaeologist, played by you, who managed to stumble upon a very old pirate treasure fleet on a secluded tropical island. The ships have been scattered all over the place by the rocks underneath the surface, but that only means that it takes more effort to get to the treasure. On the other hand, all of this is only true if you take the developer’s word for it, because there’s no actual in-game story.
Since the game is played from a third-person point of view, the perspective is rather unusual, and it may take you a while to get used to it in VR. Everything looks like it was miniaturized, so you might be under the impression that you are playing with dolls. The controls are a bit stubborn as well, since it takes quite a while to rotate the camera and face the desired direction.
You can even swim and dive beneath the water surface, although you need to improve your skills before you can handle higher pressures and longer dives. There are sharks you have to watch out for as well, although there’s the option to turn them friendly at the start of the game. As far as the graphics are concerned, they are pretty basic, but at least you can play the game on almost any computer.
Even if Lost Loot wouldn’t be considered much of a game if it wasn’t designed for VR, you can still have a bit of fun with it, especially since you are free to explore the island as you see fit. The weird perspective might reduce your nausea if you are having trouble with that.
