Everyone has dreams and goals, except that some wish for a lot more than others. The saying goes that with enough work everything is possible, but that is not always true, because life is rarely fair or rewarding, even with those who work hard and do good things. On the other hand, it’s difficult to find a reason against being a hardworking person, because it certainly doesn’t hurt to try.
His Chunnibyou Does Not Cure is a colorful visual novel that centers around a young boy trying to design his own video game and enter a competition to win prizes and recognition. The game oozes with Japan references and customs, so it might be a bit difficult for newcomers to understand some of the concepts. As an example, the term “chunnibyou” describes a young man who believes he has the power to save the day whenever he wants.
The story puts you in the role of a boy by the name of Jun Mizushima, who is trying to develop his own video game with the help of a few friends. However, the biggest challenge is getting it done before a big convention, because that would allow him to enter the competition and maybe get the recognition he craves. Naturally, all sorts of obstacles appear along the way that make the deadline seem impossible.
Each character in your team has a unique personality, although they all work toward the same goal. There’s the pretty girl, the artist, the programmer and the musician, and you interact with them over the course of the story. Speaking of which, there are a few decisions you have to take at certain junctions in the plot, but don’t expect too much variety in this regard.
Lastly, the graphics are actually very nice, but the backgrounds are a tad too repetitive and dull, given the fact that they only change once in a blue moon. On the other hand, the character artwork is great, and there are quite a few different poses and facial expressions for every character. The music is a bit too alert for this type of game, but it might appeal to some people, depending on taste.
In the end, His Chunnibyou Does Not Cure is clearly not for everyone, given the fact that you must have some sort of knowledge about Japanese customs and practices in order to get it. Hence, newcomers might not find it very entertaining, because things are not explained in any way.
