Video games are more popular nowadays than ever, which is why thousands of them are released every year. However, there’s still a difference between casual and hardcore gamers, and some people are quite proud of their gaming knowledge. Even so, it’s still quite difficult to keep track of every release when there are so many of them.
Guess The Game is a simple trivia challenge in which you have to correctly state the name of the games that appear in the pictures. There are a couple of choices at your disposal, but the questions are usually simple enough for any gamer to answer correctly. In fact, it’s a bit of a bummer how simple the game is, because a lot more could have been achieved.
The first annoyance is the fact that most of the pictures are actually box art images or wallpapers, which makes your task even easier. However, the said pictures also have logos and watermarks on them, which makes the experience feel very cheap and unpolished. The multiple answers are always quite obvious, so the challenge is taken out of the equation.
Very little effort went into the interface, so the game looks very simple and disappointing. The images are small and placed in a corner with no aesthetic sense whatsoever, not to mention the fact that they repeat themselves quite often, making the experience feel repetitive. It’s easy to imagine many improvements to the formula, on the other hand, but it would appear that the developers did not really exert themselves.
It would have been a lot nicer to deal with images that are tougher to guess, or even parts of in-game screenshots. A polished interface would also be appreciated, not to mention the fact that there are too few games to deal with. Granted, all of these issues could be fixed in a sequel, but it certainly won’t be easy to basically redesign the whole thing.
In the end, Guess The Game is not the kind of experience that keeps you engaged for longer than a few minutes, especially since the whole thing is so rough and unpolished. However, at least the underlying concept is interesting enough to be worth the pursuit.
