Gravity Labyrinth
Explore a weird world and collect shiny gems while controlling the gravity in this 3D platformer. #3d platformer #Arcade platformer #Control gravity #Platformer #Labyrinth #Maze
Platformers are some of the oldest games out there, because they were fairly simple to design back in the day, using primitive technology. However, they only got better over the years, since the genre is flexible enough to include all sorts of elements. It’s more about the challenge than it is about story or graphics, because it’s quite the rush to successfully perform a sequence of perfectly timed jumps.
Gravity Labyrinth is more of a test project than an actual game, but the gameplay is decent enough to be worth a full release sometime in the near future. Granted, at this point it features basic Unity assets and very boring level design, but all that can change with enough work. However, some new ideas are needed in the gameplay department as well, otherwise there’s nothing to catch the eyes of gamers.
To begin with, your goal throughout the game is to pick up all the red gems that are spread all over the environment. Most of them are not particularly tough to get, but you still need to practice your jumping in order to reach some of the platforms. There are also a few sections where you have to inverse gravity in order to reach otherwise inaccessible places.
On the other hand, the whole gravity reversal gimmick is nothing more than activating a switch, after which everything looks the same anyway, except for the maze layout. Hence, there’s nothing really exciting about it, especially if you have already played similar games. You do not seem to be receiving anything in exchange for the gems, which makes the whole thing feel a bit futile.
As mentioned before, it’s quite a bummer to see the almost texture-less Unity assets all over the place, because it makes the game feel more like a school project than an actual entertainment product. The animations are very basic as well, although they would matter a lot less if the gameplay were just a little bit more enjoyable and engaging.
Even if Gravity Labyrinth sounds mighty interesting in theory, the actual gameplay is very repetitive and dull. Thus, it needs more work before it feels like an actual game, and even more work in the graphics department.
