Grand Theft Walrus Demo
A simple, top-down GTA copycat that allows you to play as a walrus, while the enemies are black ducks #GTA walrus #Top-down shooter #GTA clone #Grand #Theft #Auto
While it is true that the Grand Theft Auto series revolutionized the sandbox genre and spawned countless clones over the years, not everything can be made better by adding open-world mechanics and guns. Thus, despite what you may think, roaming the city as a walrus and shooting ducks at will does not sound any better when the GTA brand is thrown into the mix.
Grand Theft Walrus is a top-down sandbox game in which, to no one’s surprise, you play as a walrus that seems to nurture a special kind of hatred for ducks. The only purpose is to shoot the ducks and probably explore the map, if you feel like it. The enemies do not shoot back at you, nor can they attack you in any way, but it can get pretty annoying to be followed everywhere by them.
‘Everywhere’ in this case happens to have a very limited meaning, because the map is tiny and you can only walk for about 20 seconds from one end to the other. It is not very populated either, although there are some buildings, a river and two bridges you can swing by. Some of the buildings have signs and billboards, but you cannot enter any of them and the only solution is to stay outside, with the ducks.
You can shoot the ducks that follow you by simply pressing the ‘Spacebar’ key on the keyboard, although a single bullet is enough every time. The movement of the character is also very simple to handle, since you can use the directional keys as you normally would. On the other hand, regardless of how simple and easy it might be, nothing actually happens, which kind of defeats the purpose.
The graphics won’t be responsible for any dislocated jaw bones either, considering the fact that the entire title was produced with a simple game creation application. The annoying thing about is that you can walk off the map if you are near one of the ends and nothing stops you from continuing to walk. Thus, if you want to come back to the map, you need to actually walk back, even if you cannot see the character.
In the end, Grand Theft Walrus is obviously someone’s shy attempt at game design, which is why one cannot judge it on the same level with the professional releases. However, maybe not every personal project should be up for grabs on the Internet, at least not if it’s as amateurish as this one.
