G.E.C.A. Demo

G.E.C.A. is a free twin-stick shooter game built in the Unreal Engine by a team called Baylor's Senior Game Design Capstone.

Twin-stick shooters form a very compact group of games, and most of them are at least decent. There are very few bad titles in this genre, which means that G.E.C.A. is facing some serious competition. By the way, G.E.C.A. stands for Grand Energy Core Assault, and it’s actually defining the gameplay.

Players have been tasked to guard the last grand energy core, and they will be facing more and more powerful enemies as time goes by. The game ends when you either defeat all the enemies or when the core has been destroyed. Getting your helicopter destroyed is not a big problem because it’s reconstructed almost immediately and you only have some time to lose.

In case you didn’t catch this from the beginning, we have to repeat it. G.E.C.A. is a free game, not just a demo. This is even more amazing if we take into consideration the fact that the game is a really good one.

It’s not clear why the developers from Baylor's Senior Game Design Capstone decided to make it free, but G.E.C.A. is also coming to Steam, and the free status might change after that happens.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple. The core is in the middle of the map and enemies can come from any side. You have a small radar in the right corner, and some pretty decent weapons. Destroyed enemies can leave behind some weapons, which are usually better than the ones that you’re using.

As you can imagine, each new waves brings bigger and meaner enemies, mines, flying crafts, bigger tanks; you name it. Upgrading the weapons is the only way to survive. Also, there are a couple of healing pads which can be used between waves, so the players are not without hope.

Since the game is using the Unreal 4 engine, it works really well on most configuration. It’s true that the game doesn’t look amazing, but that doesn’t seem to matter in the heat of the battle.
