Tower defense games are simple by nature, but your job during a match is anything but that. The good ones have you seriously calculating which towers are better for a particular situation, while the really good ones allow you to find multiple solutions to the same problem. However, simplicity can be fun as well, at least if it’s done in good taste.

Fire With Fire Tower Attack and Defense is a very simple concept, at least in theory, since it doesn’t feature anything that hasn’t been done before. In essence, you get to play through both phases, which means that you are both attacking and defending. On top of it all, you must do it against a human opponent as well, which is that much more exciting.

The two players take turns when it comes to attacking and defending, and there’s a time limit for both stages. Building towers allows you to destroy the enemy waves, but you also get to form monster waves yourself and test the enemy defenses. It’s a great combo, since both phases get more and more difficult the longer the match goes on, and it’s especially tough to figure things out in the beginning.

To make things more interesting, the towers at your disposal can be upgraded as well, and you can choose multiple tech routes, depending on your preferences. Obviously, some towers are more efficient against certain types of enemies, and the human opponent can take advantage of that by seeing your tower layout. It all comes down to dirty mind games in the end, because it’s quite easy to sell everything and try something different every round.

As for the monsters you can use to destroy the towers, they come in different varieties as well, and it’s up to you to decide what combination to send when your turn comes. More waves are unlocked later on, and it’s quite important to know how to combine the mobs. Unfortunately, the whole fun can be ruined by the glitches and bugs that riddle the game at the moment. Obviously, it’s still in Early Access, which means that they will probably be fixed later on, but it’s tough to convince people to keep playing after the game crashes a few times in a row.

All things considered, Fire With Fire Tower Attack and Defense really has a chance at greatness, but it needs to get its ducks in a row before it’s too late. Hence, it needs better bug testing and less crashes, otherwise people are not going to come back when the game is finally stable.
