Multiplayer games are incredibly popular nowadays, given the fact that almost everything is connected to the Internet. Co-op and MMO are the terms that best describe the current generation of video games, so it’s difficult not to wonder whether developers can still come up with new ideas. Thankfully, even revamped concepts can work wonderfully if everything is designed just right.
Fallen Steel is a third-person shooter with tactical elements and team-based action, and it was designed by a team of students using Unreal Engine 4. It must be mentioned that the game looks really well at a first glance, and it actually moves very well too. It may not feature too many original elements, but at least it’s a very polished product that could get somewhere with more content.
The action requires two teams of 4+1 players, and the map is open enough for a few interesting confrontations. Unfortunately, the objectives are not very engaging, even if everything looks like the action could be very visceral. The game’s biggest flaw is the fact that there are no players to play with, so you kind of have to provide you own friends to fill a server and enjoy the game at full potential.
There are two classes to choose from, namely Commando and Operator. However, there can only be one Operator on each team, so it’s important to create your squad wisely. It’s possible to enjoy the game with fewer players as well, but the gameplay is obviously less exciting this way. Moreover, there’s a lack of weapon and gadget variety, which is a bit of a shame.
Probably the greatest thing about Fallen Steel is the graphics quality, because it’s very obvious that the designers have put a tremendous amount of effort in level design and object modeling. Everything is very detailed and nicely textured, and the map as a whole is actually very atmospheric. The animations are smooth as well, and so is the lighting, thanks to the legendary Unreal Engine 4.
Fallen Steel is not an original concept and it doesn’t try to be either, but it’s clear that the developers have the necessary talent to do great things. Hence, we’re eagerly waiting for their next project, and hopefully it will be one designed with gamers in mind and not one to display their coding and design prowess.
