Euthanasia is a game that takes you in the dark realm of life after death where victims of torture and gruesome experiments linger in the halls of a mental institution. You play as Shaun Randall, a patient who loses his family and mind after a car accident leaves him without legs. Unable to hold in the pain and suffering, he asks to be euthanized, but he did not expect what lies ahead.
Euthanasia is rather disturbing from the get go because you’ll be seeing plenty of body parts lying around, butchered corpses and mutilated bodies on every wall and floor.
The atmosphere is very good for a horror game. It’s defined by both subtle sounds and in your ear whispers that tend to mess with your mind. Lighting is well done and almost everything about it visually is of surprisingly high quality seeing as how it is an indie game.
However, with all this good by its side, Euthanasia also has one major flaw that’s almost unacceptable. For a place that is full of all things gruesome, the enemies you face sure have a neat chrome paint job. They are really shiny, well, most of them are. It kind of kills the mood to have to shoot monsters that are wearing coats of bling.
Euthanasia does manage to get some scares out of you whether you’re a brave soul or not. It manages to create both the tension and in your face kind of horror, delivery is rather good.
To dispose of your enemies you will have up to four weapons to collect and use but the ammo you find is barely enough and you seriously need to use it only in dire situations. You can’t strike the enemies down with your gun but there is a trusty meat cleaver to swing around.
The bad part is that some demons/mutants/zombies/spawns of evil just won’t go down fast enough and they might kill you a lot faster than you would prefer. Be smart about it and abuse the save game feature.
To wrap it up, Euthanasia is a good horror game despite its shiny enemies and some occasional bugs. It’s meant to scare you and that’s exactly what it will do at times.
