Every culture out there has some kind of story that explains how things came to be, and these stories usually involve a being with the power to create life. In some myths, there are separate entities responsible for different kinds of life, such as humans, animals and plants. While such beings are usually part of the lore in video games, there are times when you can actually play as one of them.
Echoed World is a 2D puzzle-platformer in which you play as a god who was robbed of his power to create life, so he is on a quest to retrieve it. Although the usual set of gameplay mechanics is present, such as jumping over gaps and dealing with enemies, you must also solve a variety of puzzles along the way. These puzzles are not particularly tough, but they can prove to be challenging in other ways.
Since the protagonist is not your average Joe, he has a unique set of abilities at his disposal, in spite of the fact that he has no power to create life. Hence, he can alter life that already exists, which allows him to retrieve energy from living things and use it in a variety of ways. In gameplay terms, this basically means that you can utilize this energy to solve puzzles by instilling certain objects with energy.
There’s more variety in the puzzle department, on the other hand, such as when you have to push objects around in order to create additional platforms, or even use the said objects to shield yourself from projectiles. Your character can interact in more ways with the environment as you progress, so there’s always something new waiting for you in the later stages.
Enemies are sometimes treated differently than in your typical platformer, because your only option is to run from them in certain situations, while other times avoidance is your best bet. In terms of graphics, the backgrounds are drawn by hand, so they are certainly nice, except for the fact that they can be rather basic and repetitive sometimes. This s attenuated by the fact that you are always tinkering with something, and the soundtrack helps as well.
Although it’s not as polished as other puzzle games out there, Echoed World is at the very least an enjoyable experience, while at its best it can be a memorable adventure. Thus, it’s worth a shot if you are a fan of the genre.
