Exploring dungeons is a great experience in RPGs, especially if you like to engage in repetitive combat and hunt down all sorts of powerful items to equip your character with. However, the formula for a fun roguelike is not easy to get right, because there are many elements that must work together. It’s difficult to come up with something that hasn’t been done yet.
Dungeons of Tal'Doria is a roguelike RPG with exploration elements, in which your goal is to kill enemies and do your best to improve your characters along the way with better items and skills. There are randomly-generated worlds for you to explore, not to mention the fact that the game is playable in co-op, which means that you can invite your friends for a round of adventuring.
There are three different character classes to choose from at the moment, each one of which comes with its own special abilities. You can be an archer, a warrior or a spellcaster, depending on how you want to approach the battles ahead. Regardless of your choice, each character can get stronger along the way and learn new skills, as it’s tradition in ARPGs.
The controls could use a touch-up, on the other hand, because the aiming can be a tad too slow sometimes, and the moment feels a bit awkward. Moreover, the combat feels too impersonal most of the time, given the fact that there’s no feedback from the weapons and no sense of achievement after killing a monster. This is what made games like Diablo or Torchlight so exciting, and it would be nice to see progress in this regard.
As far as the graphics are concerned, they are voxel-based, which means that everything looks like it’s made out of cubes. It’s not an issue, on the other hand, especially if you are accustomed to games like Minecraft. The different biomes are nicely designed, not to mention all the great effects added on top to make the atmosphere really enjoyable.
In the end, Dungeons of Tal'Doria does not have enough content to be highly addictive at the moment, but it certainly has potential. Thus, you can have a blast with the game, especially if you manage to convince a few friends to try it with you.
