Defenders of Tetsoidea II

It often happens in fantasy stories that the heroes are simple people at the beginning of the tale, yet they turn out to have exceptional capabilities along the way. This is especially true of magic is involved in any way, because a simple apprentice can wield tremendous powers by the end of the story, which is enough to defeat even ancient masters of the craft sometimes.

Defenders of Tetsoidea II is a retro RPG that tells you the story of two friends as they are trying to graduate from the magic academy and earn their degree as wizards. Although the game is very basic in terms of gameplay, there are a few interesting gimmicks when it comes to the classes you can choose from, and the battles can be quite tricky sometimes if you do not make the most of your abilities.

You start with two characters in your party, and it’s possible to choose the class and specialization for both of them. Since they are students at the magic academy, these classes involve magic in one way or another, so even if you decide to be a warrior you still get to pick a magic discipline. As for the story, things go wrong for the two friends as they undertake the test, and they are caught up in a much more dangerous situation.

Your full party can hold up to four characters at once, but the many class combinations allows for much more variety than you would expect. As with every RPG, it’s possible to find better weapons and armor pieces along the way, which in turn make your characters stronger and more resilient. New abilities and spells are unlocked later on too, depending on the classes you have chosen.

The combat is pretty straightforward, since it’s a turn-based mini-game in which every character and enemy gets a turn to attack. However, it’s not as easy as mashing the attack button all the time, because there are many cases where you really have to combine your party’s abilities in order to survive a tough fight. Using potions and a bit of healing is also important, especially when fighting powerful foes.

Lastly, Defenders of Tetsoidea II is not the best-looking game out there, but then again it’s an indie production with a limited budget. Hence, the overall story is more important than the visual quality, and you can still have a lot of fun with the game even if it looks dated.
