There are still many unanswered questions when it comes to how the human brain works, as well as some of the things it does on a regular basis. As an example, dreams are still pretty much a mystery, even if modern science has a much tighter grasp on the subject at this point. Hence, they appear to be important for our health and good state of mind, but there are other questions that need to be answered.
Connected Hearts is a visual novel that puts you in the role of a boy trying to figure out a series of mysteries, many of which have something to do with dreams. The game is not as interactive as most other visual novels out there, but there’s plenty to read if you are a fan of the genre. Hence, it should keep you busy for quite a few hours if the plot catches you in its spell.
The main character’s name is Gary, and the whole thing starts when he dreams of a girl by the name of Alice. She tells him that he left a promise unfulfilled, which why he must now go through a series of events and visit dreamlike places in order to find out what’s going on. Naturally, he meets many weird characters along the way too, each one of which has something to tell him.
Although most of the game runs by itself like a classic kinetic novel, there are a handful of choices that can lead you to different endings, which means that you can re-play the game multiple times without getting bored in the process. The mystery keeps you engaged as well, because the story gets more interesting by the minute, and there are even some horror elements in there as well.
Lastly, the graphics are not exactly deserving of an award, but they are not ugly either. You can tell that the designers have really tried their best, even if most of the backgrounds are just smudges with not much detail to them. The characters are pretty detailed, on the other hand, and they are also slightly animated to inspire a bit more life into them. On top of it all, there’s a smooth soundtrack playing in the background too.
In the end, it’s the story that makes or breaks a visual novel, and Connected Hearts got things right in this regard. Thus, it should be able to keep you invested in the action from beginning to end, as well as maybe convince you to give it multiple tries in order to see all the endings.
