Having fast reflexes is mandatory if you plan on playing fast-paced games, especially shooters or anything that involves a crosshair and precise targeting. Granted, some games are more forgiving than others, which means that it’s not always necessary to react quickly in order to get ahead. Endless runners take full advantage of this concept, because any mistake you make is usually followed by a game over screen.
Chrono Streets is an interesting endless runner in which you drive a car on the streets of a chaotic city, with the goal being to avoid crashing into anything. Although you cannot use the brakes or the acceleration, you can mess with time itself, which should allow you to avoid obstacles. On the other hand, you need lightning-fast reflexes in order to see some of the cars before they hit you.
You can both speed up and slow down time, but it’s important to do it at the right moment. Speeding up rewards you with more points, while slowing down does the exact opposite. It might be better to blitz past some of the obstacles sometimes, while other times something might pop in front of you and leave you with no time to react at all. Hence, there’s a lot of luck involved as well.
You should also be aware of the fact that there are no second chances. Hence, even if you barely touch another car, your vehicle is instantly vaporized into hundreds of little pieces. This doesn’t get any better when you realize the fact that some cars practically appear in front of you, and it takes a while to slow down time enough to avoid them. Frustration is something you have to get over if you plan on achieving a high score.
Speaking of which, that is pretty much the only goal, since there are no multiple levels or anything of the sort. The seconds you stay alive are counted and they represent your score at the end, which can be a bit too simple and boring sometimes. On the other hand, the graphics are surprisingly nice, especially when it comes to the special effects.
All things considered, Chrono Streets is not very everyone, especially if you get frustrated quickly. However, the idea has merit, and since this is only a prototype at the moment, maybe the final version is going to feature more diverse mechanics and multiple difficulty levels.
