Chasing Styx
Destroy your enemies with millions of bullets in this exciting shoot 'em up with retro graphics #Shoot 'em up #Arcade shooter #Retro shooter #Shooter #Shmup #Cerberus
The Greek mythology is still pretty popular even today, in spite of the fact that it’s thousands of years old. Hence, almost everyone heard about Zeus, Hades or Apollo, and there are many modern stories inspired by events or characters from the Greek mythology. Naturally, there are plenty of video games like that as well.
Chasing Styx is a top-down shoot ‘em up in which you have to kill as many enemies as possible and survive a huge onslaught of vicious creatures. On top of that, the action takes place in the classic Greek underworld, where Cerberus and Hades reside to rule over the dead. You play the role of the hellhound Cerberus, who’s got quite of a mess on his demon paws.
As it happens, a herd of woodland rabbits has invaded the Underworld, and they need to be dealt with before they cause even more havoc. In order to do that, Cerberus must put all of his might on the line and use his fire-breathing techniques to incinerate as many enemies as possible. However, it all sounds simpler than it really is once you start playing.
Cerberus has three heads in the game as well, and each one of them fires a fireball in a straight line when you attack. However, this system is a bit annoying and counterintuitive, because the stream of bullets is a tad difficult to control. On top of that, there are all sorts of bugs and glitches you have to watch out for at the moment, but then again the game is still being fixed and updated.
As for the graphics, everything looks more or less as you would expect a retro video game to look like. The pixelated environments are actually quite moody and nostalgic, especially if you are old enough to have enjoyed the classics back in the day. The soundtrack is great as well, since it does a good job at getting you in the proper mood for killing endless hordes of enemies.
Chasing Styx is not for everyone, especially if you are not familiar with the genre at all. On the other hand, it should do a pretty good job in the hands of experienced players, and you can reward the developer by voting for the game on Steam Greenlight.
