Expressing your creativity is the easiest thing in the world nowadays if you have access to a computer, because anything can be done using a mouse and a keyboard. Whether you like to paint, draw, compose music or anything of the sort, you are free to pursue your passions as you desire. In fact, most of these can be enjoyed and practiced for free.
Block Island is not much of a game when you examine its features, but it’s a great way to express your creative ideas and put some of them into practice without having to be versed in 3D modeling software or anything of the sort. Hence, it’s a lot like LEGO, in the sense that you get cubes that can be assembled in any way you want, without any rules or restrictions, except maybe for size.
In case you are wondering what makes Block Island different from Minecraft, the answer is nothing, but the game at hand is much simpler to use and get started with than Minecraft, at least in certain regards. Hence, you can be up and running from the first few minutes and you do not have to worry about surviving, dealing with animals or having to build your own tools from scratch.
Obviously, this is available in Minecraft as well in the form of the creative mode, so not even this aspect is original. It all depends on whether you got bored of Minecraft for some reason and you are willing to try something different, but not necessarily better. Hence, Block Island features a lot of blocks to choose from, but it also comes with a few bugs and annoying crashes that have a tendency to ruin your fun.
The game area is also quite small, since you are not allowed to build anything outside the generated map. As we all know, Minecraft is large enough to be considered infinite (although it's not), so players are free to put their wild dreams into practice. On the other hand, maybe that’s a bit too scary for beginners, which is why the game at hand may be better in this regard, because it restricts your options and forces you to make do with less.
In the end, it’s difficult to recommend Block Island to those who experienced Minecraft already, but maybe newcomers might have it easier here than in Mojang’s creation. On the other hand, you have to put up with horrible performance and a lack of real content, at least in this early version of the game.
