Battles of the Valiant Universe CCG

Superheroes are not going anywhere in terms of popularity, especially after Netflix and Hollywood started to produce a lot of material on the subject. Hence, mature movies and TV shows featuring beloved superheroes from comic books are on the rise, and the world of video games is catching up as well. On the other hand, it really depends on the genre, since they can’t be all action-packed.

Battles of the Valiant Universe CCG is a strategy game with a few new ideas in terms of gameplay, although not all of them work quite as intended. The game is a lot more fast-paced than you might be used to, especially since you have to react in a couple of seconds to every move, but it’s not as deep as it tries to be, unfortunately. Hence, it ends up being rather disappointing after a while.   There are three lanes you can place units on, and it’s important to defend at the same time. Each lane has three differently colored spots as well, and the cards come in three colors too, which means that you can create combos by using the right units. On the other hand, it’s difficult to think of a proper strategy in the few seconds you have at your disposal.

As mentioned before, some of the cards have special abilities and power-ups that can change the tide of a battle, but it’s up to you to get the most out of them. It’s also possible to customize your decks and come up with your own tactics, which is pretty neat. Don’t expect an awful lot in this regard, at least not at the moment, given the fact that the game is still in early access.   Lastly, the graphics are nothing too special, unfortunately, but they are not ugly either. Most of the artwork is quite nice, in fact, especially if you get a closer look at every card. It’s a bit annoying that the backgrounds never change, at least not in the early access version, but things are bound to change in future versions.

In the end, Battles of the Valiant Universe CCG is not exactly a masterpiece of the genre, but it can be improved with some work from the developers. The superhero angle might just attract a decent crowd, even if the comic universe in question is not that well-known.
