Most CCGs out there use a common set of gameplay mechanics, so they actually feel pretty similar, regardless of differences when it comes to the background stories and the cards themselves. However, it’s always nice to see some new ideas every now and again, because nothing beats originality and cool gameplay mechanics in the video game industry.
Argentum Age is an interesting take on the genre, especially when it comes to how you control the units and how the battles take place. Hence, the biggest difference is that you do not have direct control over the units you play, but you can influence their actions using spells and a clever strategy. Thus, it’s a nice change from all the copycats that have been flooding the market recently.
The similarities are still there, on the other hand, because you still have to collect cards and build decks in order to get better. The game features both single and multiplayer modes, with a campaign that includes a simple story to keep you engaged. Every card you play has unique abilities, but using them is left up to the AI, even if you can intervene sometimes to make sure everything goes well.
As mentioned before, you are free to use spells as you wish, which is the main way you can influence the battles. Hence, it’s possible to empower certain units before the combat phase begins, as well as protect the cards that are too weak to withstand an enemy attack. Having less control over the battles might seem like a hassle, but it’s a neat way to mix things around in the genre.
The visual aspect is nothing too special, but the artwork is definitely enjoyable, albeit a tad unrefined at times. You can tell that a fair bit of work went into the cards and the backgrounds, and the interface is nicely designed as well, but the game still looks like it’s in an early development stage at this point. The sound effects could use some extra work as well.
Even if it’s not quite there yet, Argentum Age is on the right path, especially in terms of gameplay and battle mechanics. Thus, the inability to control your units directly makes things a lot more exciting and unpredictable at times.
