Sandbox games are pretty weird when it comes to gameplay, because the line between boredom and addiction is very thin. Hence, even if you have the will to continue playing when there’s no story to keep you going, sometimes there seems to be no purpose to your actions. On the other hand, games like Minecraft manage to keep millions of players engaged for many years now, so there’s definitely a secret there.
Angeldust appears to be a pretty straightforward sandbox game at a glance, but there’s a bit more to it. On the other hand, it’s also in early access at the moment, so it feels a bit empty and repetitive sometimes, especially after you see most of the building blocks. On the other hand, it’s all about the interaction with other players and the exploration of a huge world.
To begin with, you have four classes to choose from, each one of which has a special ability that allows you to fare better at a certain task. These differences are not very important at the moment, on the other hand, because there’s not enough to do in the game world to really put your character to work. Hence, more content is needed before you can feel like your character choice matters.
Another problem you might run into is the fact that the movement is a bit too slow for such a big world, especially since you have a lot of ground to cover if you want to explore. There are also some performance issues and hang-ups, although nothing too serious. However, the movement can be annoying when there’s nothing interesting to see and you are forced to crawl at a snail’s pace.
As for the graphics, the game is not exactly a looker, but the cartoonish style is actually very well chosen in this case. Hence, everything is colorful and joyful, especially when it comes to the landscapes and the objects that are part of the world. The sound effects are not bad either, but don’t expect anything too great either.
All things considered, Angeldust is not quite there yet, but it shows a lot of promise. Hence, as long as more mechanics are added along the way and the engine is refined, the final product should be quite fun and enjoyable.
