Age of Magic CCG

Strategy games have a way of becoming incredibly popular, especially real-time strategy games like Warcraft or StarCraft. However, the TBS genre has its giants as well, including names like X-COM, Heroes of Might and Magic and King’s Bounty. There’s a new kid on the block lately, on the other hand, and his name is CCG, the genre that never seems to stop growing.

Age of Magic CCG is a deck building game in which your goal is pretty much given away in the title: collect powerful cards and use them to crush your enemies. In essence, the game is not all that different from every other CCG out there, but there are a few things you’ll have to come to peace with. Hence, unlike in Hearthstone, you get to see the units duke going head-to-head on the battlefield, more or less.

You start by choosing a class for your character, such as warrior, ranger or mage, and this class decides the kind of cards you have in the beginning. Naturally, you are not limited to these, since you can pretty much acquire any card along the way. However, you are limited when it comes to the special abilities of the class, which includes spells and skills that come in handy during battles.

Although the game can be enjoyed in single player for as long as you wish, things can be a lot of fun in multiplayer as well, especially since you can go on dungeon raids with your friends. Hence, up to three players can tackle the same dungeon and loot as much treasure as they can carry. Obviously, PVP modes are supported as well, but you need to watch out for the fact that the game allows for microtransactions, which means that cards can be bought with real money.

As for the graphics, everything is pretty basic and to the point, although the artwork on the cards is quite decent, albeit not at all original from a conceptual point of view. Hence, it’s the same elven warriors and undead zombies as in every other fantasy flick out there. On the other hand, the basic graphics make it possible for anyone with a slow PC to enjoy the game.

All things considered, Age of Magic CCG suffers from a pretty bad case of pay-to-win, but it can still be enjoyed if you decide not to spend any money on it. However, the paywall forces you to wait until your energy regenerates, so gameplay marathons are out of the question.
