The new NFS is an online-only single-player game

The launch of the latest Need for Speed happened this week, and people barely noticed. It might have something to do with the cold reception, or with the fact that the game needs to always be connected to the internet.

A user posted on Reddit some very interesting screenshots that underline why online-only single-player games are a really bad idea. Let’s say that you live in a country or place with an excellent Internet connection. You're doing your job as a consumer, and such places are no longer difficult to find.

But what happens when the server you're connected to, with your single-player game, is scheduled for maintenance. You’re going to be kicked out like it’s your fault. You paid for a game and you can’t play it.

I’m sure that Electronic Arts has many official reasons why they need to do this, but the bottom line is that it’s not absolutely necessary.

The game had a number of other issues, such as the fact that you can’t pause it or that it’s way too short. All in all, the user experience is not stellar, but being kicked out of the game because EA needs to do some maintenance definitely takes the cake.

Need for Speed was supposed to be a reboot for the series, but it only managed to remind users why online-only single players should not exist in the first place.
