Peter Moore, the chief operations officer at Electronic Arts, says that the company does not believe that digitally distributed titles on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 will gain enough momentum in the coming year to affect boxed retail sales.

He is quoted by Gamasutra as telling investors that, at the moment, most gamers buy the new consoles in physical stores and using that occasion to also pick up the games they want to play.

Eventually, the industry will move towards digital distribution because it has smaller associated costs, but the executive believes that retail sales are very important because they lead to DLC purchases and to subscription-driven revenue.

Peter Moore also believes that both Sony and Microsoft will continue to support the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 for a number of years, despite the fact that game sales for the consoles are in sharp decline.
