Different codecs make it hard for Xbox 360 owners to talk with Xbox One users

Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One Party Chat service might not be compatible with the Xbox 360 one, meaning owners of the two consoles can't chat using their voices.

The Xbox One promises to improve on the many features that are already present in the Xbox 360, including the Party Chat system as it will employ a brand new codec with a wider bandwidth, meaning the voice quality will be much higher.

Because of this change in technology, Microsoft's Xbox Community Manager, Larry Hryb, has confirmed on Reddit that it's not likely that the chat system will allow Xbox One owners to talk with Xbox 360 ones.

As of yet, this aspect hasn't been nailed down, according to Hryb, so it could change in the near future, depending on how many resources Microsoft wants to allocate to the project.
