Video game publisher Nintendo announces that it plans to launch titles that were originally offered on the first DS handheld on the Wii U home console using the Virtual Console service, in order to give new players a chance to experience some of the classic games that the company has created.

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, is quoted by CVG as telling investors that, “The dual-screen Nintendo DS, one of which is a touch screen, has a very strong software lineup, and so we plan to add the Virtual Console titles from Nintendo DS software to the future Virtual Console lineup for Wii U.”

It’s unclear when the games will start to show up in the Wii U Virtual Console store.

The GamePad will be used to emulate the lower touch screen of the DS and the upper screen will be displayed using the television set.

The NES and Super NES catalogues are offered on the Wii U at the moment.
